Verdict
BOXED suits Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon and One Piece players who want a huge range of cheap mystery boxes, a full drop table before every open, provably fair draws and cheap US shipping. Before you buy gems, check your state, read the box's drop table, and plan to ship the cards you want.

How it works
BOXED, at boxed.gg, is a mystery-box site for trading cards, best known for Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon and One Piece. You buy an in-house currency called gems, open themed boxes that each give you one card or other item, and then sell it back for gems, ship it, or swap it. Every box shows its full drop table before you open it, and draws are provably fair. Before anything else, US readers should know it is not available in four states and that gems can never be cashed out. Here is how it works.
How does BOXED work?
- Sign up. You must be 18+, and you can’t use BOXED from Michigan, Washington, Louisiana or South Carolina. An ID check through Veriff is needed for some features, such as crypto withdrawals.
- Buy gems. One gem is worth about one cent. Pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay through Stripe, with crypto (BTC, ETH, USDC or USDT), or with CS2 skins.
- Pick a box. Each box shows every item it can give you and the chance of each. You can try any box in a free demo mode.
- Open it. Each open gives one item, picked by a provably fair draw. You can also play Box Battles against other players, or build your own box with Forge.
- Decide what to do with the card. Sell it back for gems, ship it, exchange it for an item of similar value, or withdraw its value as ETH.
What boxes does BOXED sell?
BOXED lists hundreds of themed boxes. The analytics site Unpacked counted 392 on September 25, 2026, 342 of them trading card boxes. Box prices move with the value of what’s inside, from $0.18 to about $8,983 in gems on that date.
| Category | What we found |
|---|---|
| Magic: The Gathering | A core category: about a third of boxes in late 2024, with new boxes in September 2026 such as Lost Caverns of Ixalan (619 gems) and Universes Beyond: Transformers |
| Pokémon | The largest category, from cheap boxes to 30th anniversary boxes |
| One Piece | A regular category, with new boxes in September 2026 |
| Also | Sports cards (added in September 2026), Riftbound slabs, Lorcana, and CS2 game skins |
What are the odds on BOXED?
Every box has a drop table listing each item and its percentage chance, and a volatility meter. BOXED doesn’t publish a headline return figure, but analytics and review sites that added up the drop tables found almost every box set to return about 85% of its price in item value. Unpacked counted 370 of 392 boxes between 84.5% and 85.5%. So on average you get back about 85 cents in card value per dollar of gems, and most opens are worth less than the box price. When an open is worth less than it cost, you get “Luckback” shards to spend in its daily reward market. Our guide to expected value in online pack openings explains the math.
Is BOXED provably fair?
Yes. Each draw combines your client seed, which you can change, a server seed whose hash is shown before you play, a counter and a per-account salt, and the server seed is revealed 24 hours later so you can check the result. It covers boxes, battles, vending machines, Forge and its other games. We found no third-party audit. Our guide on how provably fair rips work explains what the check can and cannot prove.
How does BOXED buyback work?
- Rate: 100% of the card’s listed gem value
- Timing: Instant, anytime; paid in gems (site credit)
Selling back is instant, but you get gems, and gems can’t be withdrawn as cash. BOXED doesn’t say where its card values come from, though its card data and condition standards point to TCGplayer. Cards can’t be sold or traded to other players. Its help center gives two different lengths, 24 hours and 7 days, for the price protection on a new pull. See how the rate compares in our buyback rates comparison.
How do you cash out from BOXED?
Gems themselves can never be cashed out. The only cash exit is withdrawing the value of items in your inventory as ETH to your own crypto wallet. That needs a Veriff ID check, a verified phone number and approval for crypto access, which is manual if you paid by card, and daily limits apply by account level. Otherwise, the value leaves BOXED only as cards shipped to you.
What does BOXED shipping cost?
| Cost or rule | What BOXED says |
|---|---|
| US shipping | 550 gems (about $5.50) per shipment of up to 15 cards; 2-4 weeks |
| Grouping | Cards withdrawn within 24 hours share one shipment; up to 75 cards per withdrawal |
| Where it ships | 22 destinations, including Canada, the UK and most of Europe, at higher rates |
| Packing | Double-sleeved, in a top loader and a bubble mailer |
The total is shown before you confirm, and a fulfilment fee can apply. There is no expedited option, and high-demand cards can take about five weeks.
Is BOXED legit?
- Company: Loot Labs Inc, doing business as BOXED, in Seattle, Washington. Its CEO is Milan Harris. BOXED launched in mid-2023.
- Backing: a $6M seed round in October 2024 led by BITKRAFT Ventures, after a $1.5M round in 2023 (GeekWire).
- Reviews: a large, mostly positive Trustpilot following (see the trust signals below), but an F rating and eight closed complaints at the BBB.
- Controversy: in February 2025, streamer shroud opened BOXED boxes during his Fragathon charity stream for St. Jude, which BOXED sponsored with PSA, and drew criticism for promoting card gambling. The event raised over $675,000.
- Legal: we found no lawsuits or regulatory actions. It holds no license, and its terms say it is not a gambling service.
- Terms: Washington law, with optional binding arbitration and a class-action waiver that you can opt out of by mail within 30 days. The newest terms we could read date from May 2023, because the live site blocked our tools.
Support is by in-site chat and support@boxed.gg, with no phone line. There is an Android app but no iOS app.
Is BOXED available in your state?
No, if you live in Michigan, Washington, Louisiana or South Carolina. BOXED’s help center says accounts can’t be used from those states because of a regulatory restriction. The other states are not listed as restricted. Check the rules where you live before you buy gems.
What should you check before you buy gems?
- That you are not in one of the four restricted states.
- The box’s drop table, since most boxes return about 85% of their price on average.
- How you will get value out: shipped cards, or ETH after ID checks.
- That you are comfortable with gems you can’t cash out. Set a budget you can afford to lose.
